"Beat Yale!"

I was able to cross another thing off of my CT Bucket list this past weekend. I attended a school sporting event: the sold out QU vs Yale hockey game. When I stated that I wanted to "attend a QU athletic game", this was the game I had in mind! There was such a hype around it last year that I just had to see what it was about. Granted, I'm not a hockey fan in the least bit, but I really enjoyed myself. The student section had super energized fans and they just made it really fun. Here are some pics from the event:

After 5 minutes of overtime, the game ended in a tie.

Appreciation for Weekends

What a difference a weekend makes. Seriously! Just Friday evening I was highly stressed about life and school. 2 exams this week. Getting headaches during class lectures. Not being able to comprehend anything in class, and performing experiments in lab just because the procedures were previously outlined. I felt lost.. I felt as though there was an even deeper level of feeling lost. I only have a few months of school left, but if it were not for that promise, I don't know how I would make out.

I now completely understand why many who want to pursue higher degrees take a few years off from school. The constant drill of information being poured into your head and the need to regurgitate it at a specific time is nauseating. Absolutely. Positively.
(I feel like this is right on!-- sometimes)

This weekend, I did some schoolwork, but in my own time. I enjoyed to 2 days of not feeling obligated to do much and I think that helped me a lot. I no longer feel overwhelmed, and I hope that feeling is carried throughout this week (and the remainder of the semester).

I never thought I would get to this point of feeling so drained, stressed and overwhelmed with graduate school. But I guess things like this sneak up on you sometimes.
Today, I declare my sincere appreciation for weekends.

Dear Housemate,
I've heard your wet, mucous-filled cough since you returned from your weekend at home. Rest assured, I will be disinfecting every single common surface (bathroom door, refrigerator/freezer handles, thermostat, etc) we touch to get rid of those fomites once your cough has subsided.

QU classes,
Could your classes be anymore segregated? I'm not sure why it's taken me this long to realize it, but I have and I don't like it one bit. My pathogenic microbiology class has all the guys in the back corner on the left side of the classroom. All of the females are then tucked away in the back on the right side of the classroom. All the Saudis stick together in the front, and myself, 2 other black girls and my Asian friend are clumped together on some other end of the room. It sickens me. I've decided to break the mold. I'm sitting in the middle of the class from now on!

Dear Patho Micro professor,
You are too intriguing for words. I adore your animal themed ties, and the random one with gram-negative bacteria. Your subtle little quirky jokes always make me giggle during lecture. And, I also think that playing "dolls" with your 3 year old daughter is endearing and was the best way to avoid writing up a Turning Point clicker quiz for us today.

PUSH

All we need sometimes is a little push to get a move on doing certain things.

After much lack of motivation (4 weeks worth), I finally made it to the gym. And this... this wonderful invention right here. is. my. new favorite... machine...

It's the Adaptive Motion Trainer (AMT). It kicks serious butt! ... well, mine at least.

I am looking forward to seeing the results.

More!

More birthday celebrations came along towards the end week. A few of my QU friends and I got together and we went out for dinner and karaoke. Dinner was delish and karaoke was also super fun! I still think I sound better in the bathroom/shower, but I overcame my nervousness and sang "Fire" by the Pointer Sisters as my first song. Coincidentally, my second song choice ("Roll to Me" by Del Amitri) was requested around the same time that someone else requested it, so we sang it together.
All around a good time with great people.

For inquiring minds: Videos of said singing do exist, but they will never see the light of day.

11 Random Things + Q&A Tag

Marie, over at MerelyMarie, tagged me in one of these tags that I love so much:

The Rules:
  • Post these rules.
  • You must post 11 random things yourself.
  • Answer the questions the tagger set for you in their post.
  • Create 11 new questions for the people you tag to answer.
  • Go to their blog and tell them that you've tagged them. No stuff in the tagging section about ‘you are tagged if you are reading this.’ Blah blah blah, you legitimately have to tag 11 peeps!
**Note: I really don't know who I could tag in this, so it will have to stop here with me... sadly. I'm pretty sure I just lost this game.**

My 11 Randoms:

My 11 questions (by Marie):

  1. Something you look forward to?
-- That wonderful day when I get to spend every single day of the rest of my life with my beau. No more long-distance relationship madness... No more cell phone miscommunication.
  2. Text or Talk?
-- I prefer talking (even though I'm not much of a talker unless I have a lot to say), but everyone is always too busy to talk.
  3. Favorite music artist/group/band?
-- My favorite music is contemporary Christian and alternative/classic rock/etc... I like a whole slew of artists and sometimes, I only know one of their hits... which is enough for me.
  4. Something/someone you didn't or don't get the hype or excitement over?
-- I don't get the hype over many of the pop singers (Gaga); internet trends (planking, cinnamon challenge, Headless horsemann-ing, etc); and The Twilight series.
  5. Favorite blog to visit?
-- Currently, Enjoying the Small Things. Kelle Hamptons seems like such a loving, caring mama. I also really just enjoy snapshots of her family and surroundings... oh, and the music on her page. Music on a blog page is usually a turn-off for me, but I keep listening whenever I visit her page.
  6. What really "gets your goat"...pet peeve?
  7. -- I am immediately irked by people who cough/sneeze without covering their mouths.
  8. Favorite/best video on Youtube? link please
-- Oh man! THIS is my most recent fave
  9. Guilty pleasure song/music or television show?
I'm not even going to lie... I watched the entire Season 2 of Kim and Kourtney Take New York.
  10. Salty or Sweet eats?
-- Sweets! I have such a massive sweet tooth. I had to get rid of the stock of cookies and candies from my house. Now all I have are crème brûlée flavored rice cakes. It does the trick.
  11. Fill me in on a secret about you or your life.
-- Haha. Marie... you sneaky lady, you! I don't currently have any secrets.
  12. If you had guaranteed success at doing one thing, what would it be?
-- I would want to be 100% successful at flying. Initially, I wanted guaranteed success at finding a cure for diseases, but that would put many out of jobs, and also, disease will never completely disappear from this life. Therefore, I choose flying. I would want to see the beauty of Earth from above through my own eyes.

Thanks for tagging me, Marie! This was fun! ツ

Birthday In Photos

I was able to cross a couple things off my CT bucket list after my birthday weekend. First, we took a mini-road trip to the aquarium in Mystic, CT (Bucket List #5). It was a gorgeously sunny Saturday, which was great because many of the exhibits were outdoors.

On Sunday, I opened the lovely and thoughtful gift from my beau, read cards, and relaxed a bit before the school/work week began again. Dinner was at a cute little Indian restaurant in New Haven (Bucket List #4). The food was super delicious and really filling -- BEST mango ice cream ever!! -- .
Overall, it was a sweet weekend and birthday. I enjoyed every bit of it.
