I'll Take Cool & Breezy

I don't have any complaints about today's weather-- overcast. breezy. a bit on the cooler side. Last week we were sweating bullets with a 5-6 day long heatwave. The heat was almost unbearable.
Although I'm an island girl, I'll take cool and breezy anyday.

Birthdays, Burgers and Things

We celebrated my Beau's 30th birthday on the 18th. Everything was kept pretty simple. I blew up 3 dozen balloons, strung them through the dining room and attached notes from 30 of beau's family, friends, and Sunday School students (he teaches the middle school class at our church).

I thought inflating balloons would be easy-peasy, especially with a balloon pump. But it proved to be quite difficult. Nevertheless, I wanted to do everything on my own so that's what I got for not recruiting help in that department.

Beau came home and was thoroughly surprised. It didn't take much time for him to find the notes placed between every other balloon. I saw a bit of tears well up in his eyes after reading some of the posts, and the ones from his closest of friends even brought forth laughter. There was no need to worry, after all. He loved the surprise!

We finished off the night ordering take-out from Bobby's Burger Palace. (I am not a huge burger person, but my plain "classic" burger was really good and very well seasoned... you know, in case you were wondering how it was).

On Saturday, we went had dinner by Penn's Landing with friends and tried our hardest to survive the last day of the heatwave.

Choice Determines Your Destiny

“Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny.”

Celebration Planner

I can truly say that event planning is just not my forte. I already feel really bad for my future kids. Beau's birthday is coming up this week. I have a few ideas of what I would like to do for him on our super small budget, but it's shaping up to be a little more challenging than I expected.

Sure, in a Pinterest generation, it is much easier to gather ideas and inspiration for planning any event. And, sure... I planned my wedding in about 2 months time.  But that means nothing when planning for others.

Whatever happens, I say --- Awesome birthday surprise or bust!  I have a feeling he will really enjoy it regardless and that's what makes him the sweetest.

Added Grace

Often times it appears as if this Christian walk is easy and that we are all perfect. We're not. We mess up. We fail. We are completely imperfect. But we find new mercies (Lamentations 3:22-23) and grace from God through Jesus Christ daily.

The Lord loves us in spite of. He doesn't harbour our past sins and hold them against us. Our trespasses... our transgressions... they are forgiven. Forgotten, even. Let us strive to be forgiving in that same manner. Let us pray and ask for more grace.

Beau has informed me that I am lacking in the grace area. I was a little sour at the time, but I know it is true. There are certain qualities and actions I don't like in other people, but it actually turns out that sometimes, I commit some of the same faults. I too have some of those less-than favourable qualities. It's funny how we never notice our own shortcomings until someone points them out to us -- and even then, we are in denial. We have to remove the speck of dust from our eye before we can point out the plank in your brother's eye (Matthew 7:3-5). Furthermore, we need to show a little more grace and forgive just as we would like to be forgiven (not bringing up things from the past to fuel current arguments; considering if we have also transgressed a person in the same manner that we are badgering them for, etc.)

I pray that I may show more grace to others, especially to those I love. I am still learning. This life is definitely a process. We are all a process.

Our First Fourth (of July)

Despite my efforts to avoid doing anything outside of the coolness of our home on the 4th of July, Beau and I  ventured out to the Valley Forge National Park for their Community Picnic. It was stupid hot, but we got along well. I took a cheeky photo with Ben Franklin, walked the park a little bit, watched an artillery demonstration,  and just enjoyed a laid back afternoon... away from the festivities in downtown Philly. Beau and I also decided to forego the Welcome America concert by the Ben Franklin Parkway and attended a fireworks showing the next town over (literally up the street) and then watched the end of the concert from home. The Welcome  America concert did have a pretty good line-up this year, but I'm not a big fan of concerts. And when you add the words "Largest free outdoor concert on July 4th" into the mix, it is even more undesirable to me.  I did do it once, though.

All in all, a good day .
